Every year, approximately 85,000 children suffer from congenital heart defect (CHD), meaning roughly 1 in every 100 babies is born with a congenital heart defect. CHD accounts for a substantial proportion of infant mortality, with untreated cases often leading to severe complications and premature death.
In many African countries, fewer than 112 pediatric open-heart surgeries are performed annually. In Nigeria alone, approximately 1% of all births result in death due to congenital heart defect.
Children with CHD in marginalized and impoverished areas are at significant risk due to the lack of access to quality healthcare. They need urgent medical care, specialized surgeries, and ongoing support to lead healthy lives.
